Interview conducted by Adam Holt
I have recently caught up with professional footballer Nathan Blissett to talk about his career to date. We cover the highs and lows of his career so far and we also talk about the early days of his career when he spent the early years of his career with Romulus and Kidsgrove Athletic, before going on to play many seasons in the English Football League.
Clubs: Romulus (2011 - 2012), Kidderminster Harriers (2012 - 2015), Cambridge United (loan, 2013), Hednesford Town (loan, 2013 - 2014), Bristol Rovers (loan, 2014; 2014 - 2016), Tranmere Rovers (loan, 2015), Lincoln City (loan, 2015 - 2016), Torquay United (2016 - 2017), Plymouth Argyle (2017 - 2018), Macclesfield Town (2018), Solihull Moors (2018 - 2020) & Maidenhead United (2020-).
Check out the Q&A below!
- Did anyone inspire you to want to become a footballer in the first place?
“My uncle Luther (Blissett) was a legend in the game, so living up to the Blissett name was always in the back of my mind. I always liked Drogba, and he’s key as well, physically dominant players that I based my game around.”
- How much did you enjoy your time at Romulus?
"Romulus was a great learning curve for me to see my first side of the professional game, how to carry and conduct yourself along with the pressure of the men’s competitive game. It really gave me my grounding in the sport."
- What would you say is the high point in your career to date?
“Winning the league with Macclesfield Town F.C. being crowned champions is the utmost you can strive for in your career. A close second would be playing and winning the playoff final for Bristol rovers in front of 44,000 fans.”
- What would you say has been the low point in your career so far?
“Getting promoted with Bristol and then not getting my chance at League Two level. I subsequently terminated my contract 6 months later, that’s the lowest I’ve been in my footballing career.”
- How did it feel to achieve promotion to League One with Plymouth Argyle in 2015?
“Promotion to league 1 was a great experience playing at the highest level I have competed at. It brought the best out of me mentally.”
- You also helped Macclesfield Town win the National League and get promoted to League Two, how tough was that campaign and what was the feeling like of achieving promotion?
“It’s the best experience to date, along with being the underdogs for the majority of that campaign our team cohesion couldn’t be matched.”
- Finally, what made you join Maidenhead United as your next club?
“The manager Alan Devonshire made his feelings towards my ability on the pitch and my presence in the dressing room paramount to me being his number one signing in the summer. I knew I would get the support from him and that’s what I need to play at my best.”
