I wrote this article for a news site on the commonwealth games, as part of my University studies. Find it here.
Local volunteer Richard Clarke believes the chance to work at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games is a “once in a lifetime opportunity.”
The coordinators have created the Commonwealth Collective which will include 13,000 people who will help deliver the sport event in the second city.
There are more than 300 volunteer roles in the Commonwealth Collective and most positions will need no previous experience.
The 52-year-old believes it will be special to take part in history when he helps at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.
He said: “I feel this will be the biggest event which will be held in Birmingham during my lifetime. The second city will be the main focus around the world and people will see that the region is special.
“It is a once in a lifetime opportunity and it will be a unbelievable experience to be involved in the Commonwealth Games. I want to look back and say I helped which would be a moment to treasure.
“Some people will help deal with the mass crowds and ensure everyone is safe while some people will help direct the athletes. However, everyone will be essential to ensure the competition is a success.”
Ollie Turner is a triathlete who will present Team Jersey in the second city and he considers the volunteers as crucial components to the Commonwealth Games.
He said: “I think that the volunteers will play a huge role in the Commonwealth Games. The competition would be difficult without volunteers and I’m grateful that they give the time.
“They will help make the competition coordinated and it will show the rest of the world that the local people want to work together to produce history.”
